"The Spirit of Ashton under Lyne" is a recently-published book which is stirring enthusiasm among those interested in Ashton's past.
Its author, local historian Joyce Raven, has written the book as a sort of tour around Ashton, featuring a wonderful collection of old photographs along with a number of new ones to bring her story up to date. Her husband Joseph Thomas Vollom Morton had been appointed the editor of the Ashton under Lyne Herald in circa / Up to Saturday June 29ththe Herald had previously been called the STALYBRIDGE AND ASHTON HERALD and Dukinfield, Mossley, Millbrook and District news.
It was owned by John Higham & Co but in an editorial dated June 20th. The first park opened in Ashton-under-Lyne was Stamford Park on the border with Stalybridge.
The park opened infollowing a 17 year campaign by local cotton workers; the land was bought from a local mill-owner for £15, (£ million as of ) and further land was donated by George Grey, 7th Earl of Stamford.
